Club Championship for Open Pairs - Report

The BWBC Premier Pairs event was held on Saturday. The event also doubles as a qualifier for the State Pairs Championship to be held later this year at the home of NSW Bridge in Sydney.  This year the championship consisted of two sessions; the first a Mitchell and finally an Interwoven Howell so that by the end of the tournament all pairs had played each other.  Congratulations to Karen Ody & Jim Routledge our club champs for this year. As a newly formed duo they have become quite formidable opponents.

Competition regulars Sylvia Foster & Jaan Oitmaa filled the 2nd spot on the podium missing the major prize by 2%. George Boettiger & Deborah Guthrie secured 3rd place.

Twelve pairs contested the championship. Thanks all for a great Championship played in a wonderful spirit.

Well done to Director Gary Barwick and organiser Peter Hume for a smooth championship.  Thanks to those who were involved with the lunch and yummy special treats.

Brisbane Water BC Super Congress

For the first time our Super Congress ran online using the RealBridge platform. Although lacking the vibe of face to face competition, ‘Real Bridge’ makes it feel that way. Entries were from far and wide with a sprinkling of local entrants in the mix.
Thanks to Director Ronnie Ng and to the organising team for a great weekend of bridge.

Swiss Pairs - 22 tables

The pairs event was packed full of ‘big name’ players and congratulations to winners Michael Courtney & Chris Depasquale.

Club members Barbara Grant & Louis Koolen (BWBC former president) secured 8th spot in our congress pairs.

However there’s even bigger news! BWBC Novices Linda Cunningham & Jo Ampherlaw won the Under 300 Masterpoint (Restricted) division with an overall placing of 11th beating stacks of open players in the process.

But that’s not all... yes there’s more. Beryl Lowry & John Aldersley won the Novice division also beating quite a number of open players. Wonderful effort players.

Swiss Teams

Twenty six teams entered the Sunday event.

Team Beeby won the day with 5 wins and a loss. It’s interesting to note that 3 of the winning players are NZers. I guess one plus of ‘Real Bridge’ is attracting players from faraway places.

One local team finished in the top half.  Congratulations to Team Clarke 8th.  The Crocketts playing in a hybrid team finished 5th.

Team Beeby: Nick Jacob – Tom Jacob – Stephanie Jacob – Jane Beeby.

Team Clarke: Di Coats - Jan Clarke - Sally Clark - Garry Clarke.

Presidents Cup – 2022

Lynne-HilaryEleven pairs contested the President’s Cup held on Thursday.  Novice/Restricted pairing Lynne Rainford & Hilary Owen topped the podium leaving Grand Masters Noel & Shirley Crockett a good 2% in arrears. With a 61% score card they could easily have won on many other days. Congratulations ladies. Long standing duo, Hope Tomlinson & Barry Foster finished 3rd.

Unfortunately, the President is enjoying himself in Europe, at the moment, so had to miss this event. Maybe next year.

A pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all.
