Winter Pairs

Winter PairsA total of 15 duos clashed in our Winter Pairs Red Point event. Congratulations to Dasha Brandt and David Bowerman winners of the day with 62%. Normally a percentage in the 60%s would signal a comfortable win however on this occasion Jorgen Boettiger and Deborah Guthrie finished a mere 0.5% behind to fill the 2nd podium spot. Julie Teague & Joan Walsh finished a respectable third..

It was a good day for bridge with chilly temperatures outside and warm bridge hearts inside.

BWBC GNOT Qualifying

GNOT winnersEight teams competed in the Brisbane Water round of the GNOT.  The event was won by local Team Lindsay.  They scored 5 wins out of 7 giving them top spot at the close of play.  BWBC squad, Team Wulff, had the same number of wins but the VPs were against them relegating the players to 2nd spot on the podium.  Gosford, Team Coats, filled the final podium spot with a 3, 1, 3 result.

Thanks to Tournament Secretary Peter Hume for convening this gold point event. Our thanks go to Ronnie Ng for his faultless directing. Sylvia handled the catering of today’s event and was ably assisted by Connie Lewis, Lorraine Lindsay and Bob & Beryl Lowry.  Jurate’s yummy treats also proved very popular

A qualifying round of this event is still to be played at Gosford. Therefore, hopeful teams still have a chance of making the cut.
A most enjoyable day of bridge... thanks all.

Team Lindsay – Lorraine Lindsay, Chris Hannan, Jaan Oitmaa & Sylvia Foster
Team Wulff – Judy Wulff, Susan McCall, Dasha Brandt and David Bowerman
Team Coats – Di Coats, Jan Clarke, Sally & Garry Clarke

Teams of 3 - Report

Eight teams participated in our annual Teams of 3 competition. Team Johnson topped the podium with 2 good wins and a draw well clear of the others with a final score of 42 VPs.  There was a tense struggle for the other podium spots with Teams Foster S and Foster B having the same win/loss record but in the final analysis separated by only 0.04 VPs.

Jean Pelham Charity Day

Our club’s annual Jean Pelham Charity Day proved to be a winner for all concerned.  The charity organizers had a squad of volunteers on site early preparing lunch for 15 pairs of bridge players. Charity volunteers organised several varieties of soup and crusty bread for a famished membership. Well done to the Charity team and all those who helped out with sweet treats.  We’ll let you know ASAP the total amount raised.

As far as bridge is concerned we were short seven pairs on last year.  Christine Hadaway and Chris Hannan won the day hotly pursued by Sylvia Foster and Lorraine Lindsay. There was only a single percentage point in it. Martin Johnson and Chris Hasemore were not far away taking the final podium spot. Well done players.

From Eric Gibson's History of Brisbane Water Bridge Club :

Jean Pelham called a meeting of interested bridge players to be held at the Woy Woy Progress Association Hall on Monday 1st September, 1975.

Twelve people attended the meeting and voted to form the Brisbane Water Bridge Club.  It was decided to play on Monday afternoons at 1.30pm and Wednesday nights at 7.45pm at Woy Woy Progress Association Hall (a small room with a tiny kitchenette) at a rental of $3 per session.  Auction and Solo players were to be welcomed and beginners were to be taught in order to increase membership.

A committee was formed and Jean Pelham was elected President.  The first item of importance was the provision of tables, cards, boards etc.  Jean Pelham offered to purchase all necessary equipment, to be repaid by the club at a later date.

After the meeting a game of bridge was played and ten members joined the club.

Members always look forward to the drawing of the Charity Raffles which were interspersed with breaks in play. Thanks to all those people who donated the prizes for our special day.
