Barry Foster

Barry Foster - elected Life Member 2019

Barry joined BWBC: 2008

Barry can claim to have had lessons from Lorraine Lindsay, (a trial of having lessons 5 days in a row!) in the early 2000s; later from Helen Eaton, and Christine Hadaway before also benefiting from several years of group lessons from wife Sylvia. The work scene interfered with getting immersed in bridge, but when he could, he soon became involved in the management of the club.

Barry has held the following positions:

President: 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017

Vice President: 2009, 2010, 2012, 2018

Treasurer: 2011

Besides ‘presiding’ at meetings, Barry is pleased with his efforts to improve the resources and amenity of the club for members and visitors.

During his time on the committee Barry was dedicated to improving the club room for players. Previously a craft room (with a pottery kiln), it is now a well set up comfortable Bridge Club room. Now there’s carpet, fans, posters, noticeboards, projectors wired to computers, and adapted shelving. Barry did several of these tasks, and Tom Tomlinson and Ron Meaney helped turn some of his ideas into finished projects. The club’s purchase of new and additional tables, side tables and boards means we can meet the extra demands of hosting interclub and Congress numbers.

Barry provided computer and projector support and maintenance. He had a long period keeping the website up to date , sent out the club e-newsletter, and instigated club presence on Facebook.

People who influenced his play: Fellow players who were learners at the same time (Martin Johnson, Jenny Buckley, Hope Tomlinson, John Duncan, Heather Brown, – and wife Sylvia’s enthusiasm and knowledge).

Other Clubs: CCLCBC, CCBC

Best memories of the Bridge scene: the fun of playing, developing partnerships and skills together.

Words of wisdom: Remember, your partner never deliberately makes mistakes

Barry is a Gold Life Master.
